Hillsdale adds desk-bed combination
By Thomas Russell -- Furniture Today, April 15, 2005
At the Market — Hillsdale Furniture is unveiling some new developments here that it hopes will hopes will be a hit with retailers and consumers.
One new product is a desk that gives new meaning to the term "home office," with a panel that folds out as a bed, complete with mattress in twin or full size. Retail pricing starts at $559 for two youth configurations.
There are several adult configurations, including a model in transitional styling that retails in the $1,499 range.
Folded up, the bottom of the bed sits just above the desk surface as it were part of the hutch. The desk and file cabinet are set on casters, and pull away from the hutch unit to allow the bed to fold down.
The file cabinet then doubles as a nightstand. The hutch and desk also have plenty of shelf or drawer space for storage.
Several new youth bunk beds have a similar concept, but with a gear-driven crank mechanism that moves the desk to reveal a sleep surface. Priced from $599 to $799, they come in five colors and all have ample shelf storage space. The product is suitable for childrens' bedrooms or even dorm rooms, said Jim Hembree, Hillsdale vice president of sales and marketing.
A third development is called Pro Access, a patented technology for entertainment centers. It includes wire management capability and a drawer that pulls out at an angle for easy installation and operation of receivers, DVD players and other home electronics components.
"Women like the looks and men like the function," said Hembree.
Hillsdale shows in Center Point, space 112.
