Lifestyle's Forbidden City lures dealers in
By Thomas Russell -- Furniture Today, April 24, 2005
High Point — Officials at Lifestyle Enterprise were pleased with dealer response to three collections launched this market under the company's Forbidden City division.
"We are off the ground with the new division and sold it well enough that Forbidden City has been launched and will introduce some new product," said James Riddle, who runs Lifestyle Enterprise's Shanghai leather division.
He said the April market was one of the company's best ever, in part due to the debut of Forbidden City.
Two of the new collections, Positano and Margaux, are traditional in style with strong European influences. The third, Farallon, is more transitional with a casual look and feel.
Positano includes bedroom, dining room, occasional and home entertainment products made from prima vera veneers and birch solids. Available in a dark finish, it was inspired by classical revival and early 18th century design elements such as carvings and distressing. Marble tops are an option on the nightstands, dressers and a bachelor chest in the collection.
Margaux was influenced by late 17th century furniture made in the Netherlands. Made from rubberwood solids and pecan veneers, it includes bedroom, dining room, and some occasional. Like Positano, it has two bed configurations and also is available in a dark finish.
Also featuring carved elements, Margaux has a baroque footprint as seen in individual pieces such as bombe-style dressers and nightstands. Mixed media elements such as marble and leather also are available throughout the collection.
Farallon, made from ash solids and oak and olive ash burl veneers, includes bedroom, dining room, occasional and some wood-frame leather upholstery. It is available in light and dark finishes. Design elements such as bamboo turnings and woven cane insets on bed rails and upholstery frames give the collection a casual, almost island look and style. Marble is available on nightstands and a sideboard.
"It was nice to have a relaxed look as a contrast to the more formal European collections," said Forbidden City President John Wampler.
Beds retail from $1,400 to $2,200. Wampler and other officials said this establishes the company in a good niche in looks, pricing and value.
"Forbidden City is dedicated to making the finest furniture the retailer can buy with prices commensurate with the Lifestyle division," said Riddle.
Lifestyle is the company's core case goods business and is overseen by Greg Noe.
