Hamilton & Spill: Ready for prime mattress time
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, April 24, 2005
High Point — Hamilton & Spill got retailers ready for bedtime by hosting a market pajama party, with company executives and associates putting on their best PJs and serving cookies and milk to guests.
The party highlighted the company's launch of a line of Chinese-made mattresses targeting premium price points.
H&S executives predicted the Chinese-made beds, featured in several showrooms this market, will become a significant part of the premium bedding market. The line starts at about $899 in queen and tops out at about $1,399.
"It is inevitable that China is where beds should be made from a cost perspective, especially premium beds," said Chairman Mick Verjee. "Over time, China will become significant. As front-runners in this category, we will be a significant player."
Several of H&S's encased-coil beds include visco-elastic foam in the comfort layers. Two of the models also are cushioned with goosedown.
Industry veteran Gary Harmon has joined H&S as vice president of sales and merchandising to head the company's mattress and living room divisions. Most recently, he was senior vice president of sales and merchandising at Jackson Furniture.
Hamilton & Spill designs, develops and sources furniture and bedding in Southeast Asia at dozens of factories. The company's corporate headquarters and Western distribution center is in Richmond, British Columbia. Its Eastern distribution center, with office and showroom, is near Toronto.
