New Sit ‘n Sleep Web site offers sleep tips

Offers customized advice for each consumer

David Perry -- Furniture Today, June 17, 2009

LOS ANGELES — Top 25 bedding retailer Sit ‘n Sleep is writing a book filled with sleep insights for frazzled, weary Californians.

The retailer, known for its big stores and broad mattress assortments, has a new Web site called www.sleepbook.com that provides sleep support and advice on better sleep. Consumers who fill out an online survey can download a customized sleep book full of personal suggestions for improving sleep duration and quality.

More than 13,000 consumers have filled out the survey - and the results indicate that lack of sleep is an acute problem in Southern California. Among the problems they cite: insomnia, lack of energy, and frequently waking up at night.

Almost half of the consumers (48%) reported eight or more sleepless nights during the past year, while 84% report not having enough energy during the day and 76% report frequently waking up during the night.

Larry Miller, president of Los Angeles-based Sit ‘n Sleep, said many factors can contribute to a poor night's sleep, among them a poor mattress.

"People already have enough to worry about," said Miller. "And when compounded with things like a bad economy and soaring unemployment rates, this only adds to more sleepless nights."

Articles on the site have catchy titles such as "Is your mattress making you fat?" and "Five easy ways to sleep better tonight."

The "fat" article talks about two key hormones that can affect weight gain: Ghrelin, which tells our bodies when we need more food to maintain our energy levels, and leptin, which tells us when we are full. When we don't get enough sleep, the article notes, leptin levels go down and ghrelin levels go up. That combination can lead to weight gain.

And the five easy steps to better sleep are: Make a commitment to get a certain amount of sleep each night, commit to a wind-down period before going to bed, eat a proper diet and exercise every day, establish a fixed time for going to sleep and getting up each day, and make the bedroom a place of sleep, not a place of activity.

Wingman Media is providing the marketing support for SleepBook.com and Sit ‘n Sleep's other interactive initiatives.
