Home theater seats mix power, versatility

High Point — The lure of watching movies and sports in front of a flat-panel TV is simply too tempting for many to resist, and those who want a true, theater-like experience are adding home theater seating to their family room or great room.
The upholstery often is enhanced with amenities such as ultra-plush seating, power reclining mechanisms and cup holders. Producers say that virtually any home theater option is an upgrade from the typical sofa where the family traditionally has gathered around the TV.
Home theater seats are hardly promotional door-busters (a three-seat group usually retails for $1,500 to $3,000 or more), but a number of retailers have reported success displaying them in vignette settings with coordinating occasional pieces and a flat-panel television.
Producers say it's also wise to highlight versatility, since most seating groups can be set up in numerous configurations. Many report the most popular configuration is a four-seat grouping featuring a loveseat in the middle and a single seat on each end.
Manufacturers also say that power reclining mechanisms are used on more than half the seats they sell. The option has become so popular that at least one resource — Aspenhome — has stopped offering manual mechanisms on home theater seating.
