Fla. store has N.C. warehouse

Hickory, N.C. — Retailer Bacon's Furniture Galleries has established warehouse operations here in partnership with Foothills Trucking.
The company is leasing about 80,000 square feet of a 106,000-square-foot building Foothills purchased from Lee Corson earlier this year.
The building is a three-story, former furniture factory that Corson and his partners at Hickory Hill Furniture built in 1958. Prior to the sale to Foothills in late February, the building was on the market for more than a year, Corson said.
Two-store, Port Charlotte, Fla.-based Bacon's has two gallery stores coming on line this year and was seeking more warehouse space.
The space is needed in part because of a backlog caused by delayed shipments to customers whose homes were damaged by hurricanes last year. Construction delays have caused ongoing backlogs.
Bacon's considered North Carolina because many warehouses in its area were destroyed in the storms, said store owner Bill Bacon.
Bacon's also had ties with Newton-based Foothills Trucking, which delivers goods from area manufacturers. Bacon's sources include Thomasville, Drexel Heritage, Lexington, Stanley, Clayton Marcus and Lane.
The Hickory warehouse will hold between $1.2 million and $2.5 million of wholesale inventory, Bacon said.
In a typical scenario, Foothills would pick up an order from the warehouse by late afternoon and get it to Florida by the next morning.
The timing coincides with the opening of Bacon's two newest galleries.
One is a Lane and Laneventure store that will be an extension of Bacon's Port Charlotte location. The gallery will be 32,000 square feet, bringing the total square footage of that site to 105,000 square feet.
The other is a stand-alone 19,500-square-foot Drexel Heritage store in Sarasota. Both stores will have grand-opening ceremonies on May 26.
