Gallery, Select Comfort lead way in performance
Other standouts include Pier 1, Rooms To Go

High Point — Houston-based Gallery Furniture, a perennial performance leader in the Top 100, took the crown for best stock turns and sales-per-square-foot performance, edging out Select Comfort.
But the bedding specialty retailer held on to its leader status in the gross margins category.
The one-store Gallery, No. 59 on the Top 100, and No. 1 in sales per square foot for the previous year, continued its sales-per-square-foot domination with an estimated $1,370 average.
That bested No. 14 Select Comfort, though the air bed specialty retailer still has plenty to brag about with average sales per square foot last year of $1,208.
Select Comfort also posted the highest gross margin at 61.1% (followed by No. 2 Pier 1 Imports at 54.3%), while Gallery had the best inventory turns — 29 times to Select Comfort's 23 turns.
Gallery and Select Comfort were the only retailers to appear on the Top 10 in all three performance categories.
No. 1 Rooms To Go repeated as the third-best performer in the sales-per-square-foot category, with an average of $850.
As it did the previous year, No. 77 Sit'n Sleep showed up twice on the top 10 lists, tying for the eighth best sales-per-square-foot average with No. 28 City Furniture ($500) and ranking ninth highest in stock turns with an average of 11 times annually.
Also appearing twice (again) is No. 61 Bernie & Phyl's Furniture, with the fifth-best stock turns (12.5 times) and the 10th-best sales-per-square-foot average ($460).
The median sales per square foot for the Top 100 — with 50 companies reporting — was $300. With 38 estimates available, median inventory turns was 5.4 times, and the median gross margin was 45% from 28 estimates.
