Focus on entrepreneurs, professionals

ATLANTA -- Developing Leaders for 2010 was the theme of WithIt's 2005 National Education Conference, held at AmericasMart here earlier this month and sponsored by Stanley Furniture, AmericasMart and Furniture|Today.
Women In The Home Industries Today organized the conference on two tracks, one for accomplished entrepreneurs and one for professionals striving to advance. The opening session, Where Women Are, Where They Want to Go, How to Get There, was based on data compiled by Catalyst, a research and advisory organization, and presented by Julie Nugent, a senior associate at Catalyst.Nugent covered material about women's aspirations, barriers to their advancement, reasons for leaving their jobs and strategies for success.A session called Everyone Owns Leadership presented a formula for modern-day success based on the story of Queen Esther, perhaps the most powerful women in the ancient Persian empire.Author Connie Glaser, who wrote "What Queen Esther Knew," told the audience that Esther's success — especially in light of her beginnings as an exiled orphan girl — was based on being a brilliant strategist, persuasive speaker and courageous risk-taker, while remaining true to her ethics and principles. There were 10 breakout sessions during the two-day conference, including, What Are You Doing About You? Living by Design, Not by Default, led by life coach Mack Arrington, which focused on self-evaluation and the development of "delicious habits" to help keep life and work balanced.Another session — Break On Through: How Did They Get There? — put the spotlight on a panel of successful women from the retail, sales, manufacturing, design and supply sectors.Linda Carey of Ruddell & Associates, Kathy Wall of The Media Matters, Ann Navarra of Jerome's Furniture, and Jesse LaFalce spoke about personal visions and leadership.
