McCreary Modern's new facility nearly doubles capacity

Carole Sloan -- Furniture Today, July 4, 2005

Upholstery maker McCreary Modern has purchased a 317,000-square-foot facility in nearby Conover, N.C., a move that will nearly double its manufacturing and distribution capacity.

"The added space is essential just to meet our current needs; we're just maxed out," said CEO Bob McCreary.

Last year, the company expanded its McCreary Chair manufacturing facilities by 40,000 square feet, bringing that segment to 70,000 square feet.

The company currently has 480,000 square feet of manufacturing and distribution space. The new facility, formerly owned by Regency Home Fashions, "will concentrate on certain dedicated upholstery — all-leather and slipcovered styles," McCreary said.

The brick, air-conditioned plant has 50 docking doors "and is perfect for upholstery production immediately," he said.

The company operates six manufacturing and warehousing facilities in Newton, Maiden, Lenoir and soon Conover, N.C.

McCreary described business as "very good. There is still opportunity for domestic manufacturing companies that offer high-quality, distinctive merchandise and quicker delivery. We're finding ways to stay competitive."

The company makes its own exposed wood frames and does frame assembly and cut-and-sew.

For fabric, "We have no option but to buy imports when our domestic suppliers outsource," McCreary said. "We work very hard to deal with domestic suppliers."

Rick Coffey, senior vice president and chief operating office, said, "The proximity of this (Conover) facility to our existing operations makes logistical sense and supports our total commitment to domestic manufacturing."

The new facility will be up and running quickly, Coffey added, allowing McCreary to expand other aspects of its operations.
