The Brick: Growing on many fronts

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, September 5, 2005

Launching its first Sleep Better stores is only one plank in The Brick Group Income Fund's growth plans.

Other initiatives include:

  • Brick Plus, a virtual store-within-a-store concept, currently being tested at a Brick store in Edmonton, with rollout to other stores expected this fall.

  • Construction of an 800,000-square-foot warehouse in Mississauga, Ontario, expected to be operational in spring 2006.

  • Opening of the third HomeShow Canada store, in Oakville, Ontario, this month.

  • Adding new electronics to The Brick's lineup, including such hot-button items as iPODs and MP3 players.

Meanwhile, sister chain United Furniture Warehouse has completed renovation of its store in Coquitlam, British Columbia, and has opened its first three stores in metro Toronto, long a target market for UFW, with another five scheduled for the fall.

"We are excited about our significant expansion plans for the remainder of the year, with the addition of 18 new stores under three of our banners," said President and CEO Kim Yost.

The company recently opened its eighth Brick store in Quebec, in Marche Central.
