U.S. sends $6M to High Point

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, August 21, 2005

The federal highway bill that President Bush signed this month includes more than $6 million for the remaining phases of a downtown transportation terminal that would be the heart of the furniture market's shuttle system.

The money, to be parceled out annually through 2009, will allow the city of High Point to construct, among other things, a covered waiting area for shuttle riders.

The first phase of the project, featuring the widening of a block of Commerce Avenue between Wrenn and Hamilton streets, should be completed before the October market.

Tammy Covington, vice president of operations for the International Home Furnishings Market Authority, said the cost of the terminal will total about $11 million, including state and local matching funds and $1.7 million spent on the first phase.

The wider street will have three lanes for bus loading. Computerized signs will direct riders to various loading areas.
