Finalists in 15 categories chosen for annual Pinnacle Design Awards

Winners to be announced at the October High Point Market

NEW LONDON, N.C. — Finalists in 15 categories have been announced for this year's 14th Annual ASFD Pinnacle Design Achievement Awards.

Winners in the annual American Society of Furniture Designers competition will be announced at the Pinnacle Awards banquet during the fall High Point Market.

"Despite the continued slump in furniture retail sales, ASFD and the Pinnacle Committee were encouraged by the breadth of this year's entries," said Steve Hodges, ASFD president, who presided over the judging to select the finalists, along with Christine Evans, executive director. Katie Hatch, ASFD vice president, serves as the 2009 Pinnacle Awards chairperson.

Among major collections, the contenders are Black Ice, by designer Troy Hollis for Lexington Home Brands; Destination, by Jena Hall, Brent Camfferman and the Aspenhome Design Team for Aspenhome; and Paula Deen Home, by Otto & Moore Inc. Design Team for Universal Furniture.

Here are the finalists in other categories, listed by product, designer and company:

• Occasional tables: Lexicon Drink Table, Shaun Melvin for Baker Furniture; Milan Crescent Base Side Table, William Faber for Century Furniture; and Palomar Round Bunching Cocktail, Berry & Clark Design Associates for Bernhardt Furniture.

• Occasional storage: Lexicon Tower Etagere, Shaun Melvin for Baker Furniture; Loft Table & Pot/Plate Rack, Pamela Merritt and Donna Dill for Design Solutions; and Metro Black, Valerie Schmieder and Matthew Maher for Loft 102 for the Home.

• Youth furniture: Artsycraftsy!, Arlette Mulford, Jonah Staw and Arielle Eckstut for Powell Co.; Base Camp, Mike Warren and Shannon Lookabill for Stanley Furniture; and Reflections, Abigail Eaton and W. Dudley Moore Jr. for Lea Inds.

+ Casual dining: Bonita, Michael Wolk for Allan Copley; Lexicon Guild Arm and Side Chair, Shaun Melvin for Baker Furniture; and Veer, John Caldwell for Tropitone Furniture.

• Formal dining: Alston, Tim L. Annas for Kincaid Furniture; Milan Dining, William Faber for Century Furniture; and Palomar Dining, Berry & Clark Design Associates for Bernhardt Furniture.

• Motion upholstery: Aurora, Rick Lee for American Leather; Gilbert, Michael Wolk for American Leather; and Sogno DreamWave, Toshiyuki Kita for Inada USA.

• Stationary upholstery: Bergen II Chair, Joe Ruggiero for Miles Talbott Furniture; Cooper Lounge Chair & Chaise, Michael Wolk for Della Robbia; and Giselle Sectional, Michael Wolk for Carter.

• Leather upholstery: Bamboo/Rattan Chair, Glenn Yelvington and Joel Cadampog for Maitland-Smith; Grisham Sofa, Amy Archer for American Leather; and Springfield Sofa & Chair, Amy Archer for American Leather.

• Accessories: Birch Forest Wall Decor, Allan H. Palecek for Palecek; Bloomin' Onion Vase, Jeremy Penn for The Phillips Collection; and Galvanized Wall Circles, Jason Phillips and Julie Phillips for The Phillips Collection.

• Lighting: Formae Contemporary, George Chandler, David Martin and Charles Camacho for Hubbardton Forge; Hallie Wall Sconce, Pasquale Miranda for Murray Feiss; and Ikebana Sphere Lamp, Allan H. Palecek for Palecek.

• Home office: Adagio, Ken Levi and Andy Nielsen for Aspenhome; Milan Writing Desk, William Faber for Century Furniture; and Ventura, Mike Warren and Shannon Lookabill for Loft 102 for the Home.

• Entertainment centers/home theater: Bamboo TV Cabinet, Paul Fihn and Manee Meepanya for The Phillips Collection; Metro Black, Valerie Schmieder and Matthew Maher for Loft 102 for the Home; and Young Classics Tailor, Ken Levi and Andy Nielsen for Aspenhome.

• Summer/casual: Latour Lounge Chair, Shaun Sweeney for Woodard Furniture; Luxe 30 Club Chair, Paul E. Rogers for O.W. Lee Co.; and Sirocco, Richard Holbrook for Brown Jordan.

• Bedroom: Bonita, Michael Wolk for Allan Copley; Grove Collection, Curt Christian for Martin Home Furnishings; and Kemperton Envision, Mark Tucker III for Hooker Furniture.

Judges who selected the Pinnacle finalists were Richard Bennington, High Point University; Gary Evans, Furniture/Today; Ellen Gefen, Gefen Productions; Jackie Hirschhaut, American Home Furnishings Alliance; Linda Longo, Home Lighting & Accessories; Sheila Long O'Mara, Home Furnishings Business; Kip Pohlman, Otis College of Art & Design; Chuck Portaro, Furnitureland South; Dianne Ray, Garden City Furniture; Max Shangle, Kendall College of Art & Design; Julie Smith, former editor of Furniture Style; and Steve Walker, North Carolina State University.

Furniture/Today is the major underwriter of the 2009 Pinnacle Awards. Editor-in-chief Ray Allegrezza will emcee at the Pinnacle Awards banquet, to be held in the International Home Furnishings Center ballroom on Monday evening, Oct. 19, during the fall High Point Market.
