HGTV's Surmelis launching upholstery at online retailers

By Gary Evans -- Furniture Today, July 6, 2009

Designer and HGTV host Angelo Surmelis will launch his first upholstery collection Aug. 10 through a number of Internet stores.

Called Modern Classics, the line will be ready-to-assemble and will be retailed by Overstock.com, Sears.com, Costo.com and CSN Stores, a Top 3 online retailer of home and office goods. Additional retail outlets will be added this fall.

The product is supplied by RTA specialist Handy Living in Melrose Park, Ill. Retail prices will range from $399 for a loveseat to $599 to $699 for sofas, $249 to $299 for chairs, $269 for a square cocktail ottoman and $289 for round nesting ottomans.

The company says the product is eco-friendly, using less polyurethane foam and pocket coils manufactured with recycled steel. In addition, it says its compressed packaging — which includes no polystyrene products — saves the equivalent of 10 gallons of diesel fuel for each item.

Covers will include fabric, microfibers and leathers in colors that range from papaya to lotus green to charcoal grey.

Surmelis is host of the HGTV show “Rate My Space” and also launched TLC's “Clean Sweep” and Lifetime's “Merge.”

“This wasn't a vanity project,” he said, noting that he grew up in a blue-collar family who couldn't afford very nice furniture. Surmelis said he wanted to create furniture that is attainable by everyone.

In addition to his television shows, Surmelis continues to design spaces and events at his company angelo:HOME in Los Angeles.
