High Point receives more funding for improvements

High Point — Another $675,000 in federal money has been released to the city of High Point to help pay for improvements to the furniture market's transportation terminal along Commerce Avenue.
The latest funding, from the 2005 Treasury Department appropriations bill, is in addition to the $2.04 million in federal dollars that were released in June.
The first phase of the terminal improvements, featuring enlarged passenger waiting areas and additional lanes for shuttle bus loading, will be completed in time for next month's market, which officially begins Oct. 20.
Future plans call for a permanent canopy covering a large portion of Commerce Avenue between Hamilton and Wrenn streets, which is the hub of the market's massive shuttle system.
An additional $6.2 million for the project will come from the federal highway spending bill that was signed last month by President Bush. That money will be distributed over four years beginning with the 2006 fiscal year, which starts Oct. 1.
