Montoya seeks licensees
By Powell Slaughter -- Furniture Today, October 16, 2005
New York — Interior designer Juan Montoya has retained Concept Marketing Group here as licensing agent for development of a home furnishings collection.
"We are honored to have been selected as licensing agent for Juan Montoya and the Juan Montoya Design Corp.," said Kerry Glasser, founder of Concept Marketing, which has linked several high-profile licenses with furniture makers.
"Clearly, this icon in the world of interior design will dramatically enhance the industry landscape through the creation of products available to the consumer which accurately showcase Montoya's design aesthetic," he said.
Montoya said he is not wedded to a particular style or period. "The client and space dictate what style I will be working in," he said. "I consider myself a tailor who finds the best materials to clothe an interior in the most appealing and comfortable manner, down to the last detail."
Montoya's design preference is for uncluttered, open areas, with a concentration on careful placement of objects to enhance the qualities of space and scale in a room. The pieces chosen also reflect his interest in a variety of cultures.
"This will be a collection in the true sense of the word, as the goal for Montoya is to design an array of products spanning categories which address every room of the home," Glasser said.
Montoya was born and spent his early years in Bogota, Colombia. After studying architecture at Universidad Gran Colombia in Bogota, he moved to New York and enrolled at the Parsons School of Design, where he graduated with a degree in environmental design.
He then worked as an interior designer in Paris and Milan. After returning to New York, Montoya opened his own office in 1978. His firm specializes in residential and contract interior design, with projects across the United States as well as abroad.
His work appears frequently in both national and international publications. Most recently, Architectural Digest's August issue showcased his designs for a beachfront vacation home in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
Montoya also lectures throughout the United States and abroad on design. He has received the S.M. Hexter Award for Interior of the Year, the Chicago Design Sources Award for Excellence in the Field of Residential Interior Design, and the Resources Council Inc. Award for Furniture Design.
He also has been chosen as a panel member for the National Endowment for the Arts, and has been elected to the Interior Design Hall of Fame.
Concept Marketing Group has developed a broad array of furniture licensing programs, including Nautica and Tommy Bahama at Lexington Home Brands, Oscar de la Renta at Century, Jessica McClintock at American Drew, J. Peterman at Jeffco, and Althorp at Theodore Alexander.
