Modern styles take spotlight in Egypt
By Fakhry Boutros -- Furniture Today, July 13, 2009
CAIRO, Egypt — Furniture introductions took a turn toward the modern at the sixth annual Furnex show here, as designers and producers applied their considerable skills with woodworking, inlays, finishing and other decorative treatments to cutting-edge contemporary shapes.
The show, held at the Cairo International Convention Center, featured more than 120 Egyptian manufacturers of furniture and textiles. Long known for their classic French and English reproductions, producers have been branching out in recent years with trend-setting contemporary furniture in wood, fabric and other materials.
A number of Egyptian companies are working with European designers to create product that will appeal to foreign markets. The move has expanded the industry's international profile, generating more visibility and customers for the growing export sector.
