Universal buyer's pass may be reality in April
Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, October 18, 2005
At the Market — A universal buyer's pass that will be accepted at all showroom buildings here could become a reality by April, market organizers said last week.
Judy Mendenhall, president of the International Home Furnishings Market Authority, said details of the new registration system are still being ironed out, but said it would allow buyers to register at any showroom building and receive a pass that would be universally honored.
Some type of online system for advance registration also will be developed, she said.
Mendenhall said the database of registered attendees would be available to showroom owners, but the exact method of getting them the information hasn't been decided.
Currently, the International Home Furnishings Center, the market's largest showroom complex, acts as the unofficial registration agent for the market, but a few showroom buildings don't honor the IHFC pass.
Separately, Mendenhall said the Market Authority is studying the possibility of expanding its shuttle service to include routes between local hotels and the Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, N.C. Such a move could lessen the need for rental cars, whose rates are a frequent source of complaints.
Free shuttles between downtown High Point and the Greensboro, Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte airports currently are available, and the market also has extensive network of free shuttles serving some 110 area hotels and motels.
