Jordan's wins lawsuit involving 2007 baseball promotion
Had refunded purchases based on Red Sox win
Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, July 23, 2009
BOSTON — The Massachusetts Appeals Court has upheld a lower court decision to dismiss a lawsuit alleging Jordan's Furniture's 2007 free furniture promotion violated state gambling laws, the Boston Globe reported.Jordan's "Monster Deal" promotion that year involved refunding certain furniture purchases made during a March-April period if the Boston Red Sox won the World Series that year (they did).
The suit filed by Joseph Frate claimed the promotion was an illegal lottery. Frate had been convicted in 1987 of operating an illegal lottery and possessing gambling devices that resembled slot machines in which customers could insert a coin, see flashing lights and get electronically generated numbers that could then be used to go play the official state lottery.
Jordan's CEO Eliot Tatelman told the Globe, "We're thrilled with the decision." Click here for more.
