Motion upholstery (excluding recliners) in furniture stores

  • - Accounted for 6% of furniture store sales in 2007.
  • - Accounted for 6% of selling space in furniture stores in 2007.
  • - Median SKUs, 10 and median number of lines, 3.
  • - Median best-selling price points for a fabric-covered motion sofa, $900, and $1,300 for a leather-covered motion sofa.

Motion sofas - from Upholstery Fabric and Style Survey

  • Leather/suede grabbed the largest pieces, 37% and 63% respectively, of market share of units sold in 2008 at both medium ($900 to $1,599) and high ($1,600 and above) price points.
  • At low price points ($899 and below), microdeniers gobbled up the biggest slice of the unit market share pie at 41%.
  • Contemporary styles reigned as market share leaders for motion sofas across all price points, capturing over one-half of market share of units sold at medium (57%) and high price points (58%) and nearly three-quarters (72%) of share at high price points.
