Ikea opening new store in Portland

By Clint Engel -- Furniture Today, October 20, 2005

Continuing its ambitious expansion push, Ikea said it will open a store in Portland, Ore., in 2007, its second in the Pacific Northwest.

The Sweden-based home furnishings giant said the 280,000-square-foot store will be built near Interstate 205 and Airport Way, at the eastern end of a 120-acre mixed-use development called Cascade Station. Construction is expected to begin in the spring with an opening planned for a year later.

Ikea, which doesn't release investment figures or projected sales, was ranked No. 5 on Furniture/Today's Top 100 with estimated U.S. furniture, bedding and accessories sales of $1.075 billion for the fiscal year ended Aug. 31, 2004.

"We are thrilled to enter the greater Portland area with a second home in the Pacific Northwest," said Pat Merwin, Ikea real estate manager. "Ikea Portland will allow us to be more convenient to our customers while also introducing the unique Ikea family-friendly shopping experience to new customers throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington."

Among the features: 1,200 parking spaces, nearly 10,000 items, four furnished model homes, 50 room settings and Ikea's trademark supervised play area and 250-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties.

Ikea now has 25 stores in the United States (and 225 worldwide), including a franchisee-owned store in the Seattle area that opened in 1994.

The Portland move is part of a bigger plan to open five U.S. stores a year over the next few years. Earlier this year, the retailer opened its first stores in Atlanta and Frisco, Texas. In September, Ikea opened its second Chicago-area store in Boling-brook, Ill., and its first Boston-area store will open early next month in Stoughton, Mass.

Ikea also has plans for stores in Brooklyn, N.Y.; Canton, Mich.; Dublin, Calif.; Round Rock, Texas; Somerville, Mass.; West Sacramento, Calif.; and Austin, Texas, and said it's considering expansion into Charlotte, N.C., Denver, St. Louis and Cleveland, Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio, among other markets.
