New China plant will double Stylution's bedding capacity

By David Perry -- Furniture Today, October 20, 2005

Stylution USA officials at telling retailers here their China parent is doubling its mattress capacity.

The expanded facilities in Dongguan, China, will allow Stylution to serve the entire U.S. market with American-styled, value-packed mattresses, officials said.

"We got a lot of interest in our company from the Las Vegas market," said Ed Scott, president and CEO of Stylution USA. "The mattress factory addition gives us the ability to service the entire U.S. market. We will have the capacity to ship 50,000 mattresses per month to the United States."

Jack Chen, a veteran of the international bedding scene and the head of Stylution International in China, said his company is well along on its new mattress factory, a 450,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility. He said the factory should be finished by January 2006, and will be capable of producing 4,000 pieces of bedding per day, twice the current capacity.

Stylution will move its mattress production to the new facility, being built at the company's complex in Dongguan. That will enable Stylution to expand its case goods production, Chen said. His company ships case goods, upholstery and bedding around the world. He became a Restonic licensee for the Far East in 1973.

Chen and Scott said the current unrest in the U.S. foam market, which has led to soaring foam prices and foam allocations, makes the Stylution USA line a good alternative for U.S. bedding retailers.

"Now is a great opportunity for Stylution to enter the U.S. market because foam costs are increasing in the United States," Chen said. "In China, foam costs are not increasing as much. So this is a good time for American retailers to import mattresses from Stylution. Our message is: Are you ready yet?"

Stylution USA is holding prices steady, he said.

Scott, formerly CEO of U.S. bedding producer Restonic, said retailers may not be able to get the beds they need to keep their business moving. "Retailers who are not investigating other sources of bedding are doing themselves a disservice," he said.

He said Stylution's beds now meet the stringent open-flame standards in effect in California, and those models are available to any U.S. retailers who want them. Because Stylution is purchasing its fire-resistant materials in China, the cost differential between FR and non-FR beds is minimal, Scott said.
