Excelsior introduces Nicole Miller furniture
By Powell Slaughter -- Furniture Today, October 21, 2005
At the Market — Sporting a jacket made with a fabric from her new collection at Excelsior Designs, fashion and accessory designer Nicole Miller fit right in with the introduction here of the sleek, contemporary wood and upholstered furniture.
She said the sheer scope of the project — 43 wood pieces, 12 upholstery styles and 235 fabrics — was daunting. Over a year passed between her initial concepts and sample production.
"It felt like I was building a house," Miller said. "It was an overwhelming process designing a furniture collection of this size, but it is beautifully done."
Some things in the process came naturally to Miller.
"The aesthetics are always the same for me. I like clean lines, not too jazzy," she said. "I wanted the furniture collection to be more like fashionable clothing. A lot of the lines in the furniture look like the curves I put in my clothing. I've always liked combinations, so working with the woods was especially enjoyable."
Those woods include an array of exotic species, such as zebrano, canaletto, California walnut burl, Tanganika, frozen birch and ribbon mahogany that added almost fabric-like patterns to the case pieces.
"Shape comes first, and that's the way it is in fashion design," she said.
Fabric, of course, gets plenty of attention, and Miller said she wanted upholstery and pillows to exude the same touch of edginess found in her apparel line.
Miller and Bud Konheim, CEO of Nicole Miller Inc., were impressed with their first visit to the High Point market, and with Excelsior Designs' commitment to the furniture company's first licensed line.
"The Excelsior effort here at the showroom matches the effort Nicole put into the design of the collection," Konheim said.
"I think Steve (Kayne, Excelsior president) has really delivered."
With the Nicole Miller collection, furniture joins a broad line of Nicole Miller licenses that include bedding textiles and linens, tabletop items, picture frames, a bath line, candles and other home products.
Excelsior Designs is showing in space D-1110 of the International Home Furnishings Center.
