Ikea eyes Salt Lake City

First Utah store to open in spring 2007

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, December 4, 2005

Ikea will build its first Utah store in the Salt Lake City suburb of Draper, the big Swedish home products retailer said last week.

The 310,000-square-foot store is expected to open in spring 2007 on a site at the northwestern corner of Interstate 15 and Bangerter Highway. Draper is on the south side of the Salt Lake City metro area and is about 20 miles north of Provo.

The store, along with 1,300 parking spaces, will occupy 22.5 acres of a 40-acre site, which is zoned for retail but is undeveloped. Ikea said it will sell about 13 acres at the site for complementary retail and restaurant uses.

"We are thrilled about entering Utah at this site in Draper, where we know we can build on our presence in other Western states," said Doug Greenholz, Ikea real estate manager. He said that with the other parcels to be developed, "We are confident a strong retail destination will emerge in Draper."

The store will feature Ikea's distinctive architectural design and will have other features common to the chain, including nearly 10,000 exclusively designed items, three in-store model homes, 50 room settings, a supervised children's play area and a 300-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties and American dishes. It will employ 300 to 350 people.

Ikea has 26 U.S. stores, including Western locations in Arizona, California and Washington. A future store is planned for Portland, Ore.

The retailer says it intends to add four or five U.S. stores a year at least through 2010. The Draper and Portland stores are among eight that have been announced for future construction; others will be in Brooklyn, N.Y.; Canton, Mich.; Round Rock, Texas; Somerville, Mass.; and Dublin and West Sacramento, Calif.

Based on an estimated $950 million in furniture, bedding and decorative accessory sales in the fiscal year ended Aug. 31, 2004, Ikea ranked fifth on Furniture/Today's latest list of the Top 100 U.S. furniture stores. It had total U.S. revenue of $1.7 billion. Worldwide, the company has more than 225 stores in 33 countries.
