AFW store design helps environment

Covers 635,000 sq ft

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- American Furniture Warehouse has broken ground on its 11th Colorado location in Firestone, a community between Denver and Fort Collins.

Scheduled for completion in August, the 521,000-square-foot megastore and warehouse will be the company's largest location after its Englewood facility at 635,000 square feet.The 132-acre Firestone site includes 88 acres that American Furniture Warehouse will develop for other businesses such as retailers and restaurants."American Furniture Warehouse Firestone will give us a distribution point for our current and future customers in northern Colorado that is much needed in light of the explosive growth rate in the state — particularly that part of the state," said Jake Jabs, president and CEO of the Top 100 retailer.The new building will use a number of environmentally friendly techniques in its construction and operation, including:* Use of recycled materials in construction, including concrete, asphalt, paint, and carpet made from two-liter bottles. The store also will use recycled cardboard.* High-efficiency heating and air conditioning systems and kitchen appliances.* Solar-powered electricity and hot water systems, and a wind turbine for power generation.* A computer-controlled system for heating, air conditioning and lighting.* Water-saving plumbing fixtures and water-conservative landscaping.
