HIGH POINT -- The number of riders on the High Point market's local shuttle system was essentially unchanged during the October market, but many more rode the routes that served the Charlotte and Raleigh airports, the International Home Furnishings Market Authority said.
There also was a big jump in the number of riders using shuttles that ran between downtown High Point and two satellite parking lots.Tammy Covington Nagem, Market Authority vice president of operations, said the numbers are good indicators that attendees are bringing fewer cars into the downtown area. “The new transportation terminal put a little more emphasis on our whole transportation system,” she said. “We got a lot of good feedback on it.”She said 553 marketgoers rode free shuttles between High Point and the Charlotte and Raleigh airports, compared with 131 at the April market, when the service cost $50. At the next market, the Charlotte and Raleigh shuttles will begin operating on Monday, April 24, three days before the official opening. In October, the service began one day before the official opening.Nagem said the satellite parking lot shuttles also will begin operating on April 24. They will serve parking areas at Oak Hollow Mall and near the intersection of South Main Street and Market Center Drive.During the October market, the satellite parking shuttles had nearly 3,000 more riders than in April, even though the South Main Street route didn’t begin until the official opening day.Nagem said shuttles to more than 100 area hotels and motels had a drop of about 500 riders, while the shuttle system’s total ridership was about 1% below the April market.Next April, hotel shuttles will begin operating two days before the market’s official opening day. That’s one day earlier than at the most recent market.
