DeCoro to expand China plant
Eyes case goods sector
Joan Gunin -- Furniture Today, January 4, 2006
SHENZHEN, China -- Italian-owned leather upholstery producer DeCoro will begin a major expansion of its sofa production facilities here next month as it positions itself to leap into the case goods segment.
The plant will be expanded from the current 2 million square feet to about 3.75 million. The larger facilities will meet the growing demand for the firm’s leather sofas as well as enable DeCoro to move into case goods, the company said in an announcement.
DeCoro introduced its first wood furniture, including dining room and home entertainment, at the High Point market in October.
DeCoro said it will hire an additional 2,500 full-time workers to meet its growth demands.
With a combined workforce of 5,500, the new facility will allow DeCoro to produce 70 to 90 containers of furniture each day. At an estimated cost of $15 million to $20 million, the new construction will begin in February and be completed in November.
“We are seeing increasing demand for our products, especially after the last High Point market show in the United States,” said DeCoro President Luca Ricci. “It was the biggest High Point show ever for us.”
