Bigsbys buy Park Place line

David Perry -- Furniture Today, January 1, 2006

Park Place Corp., based here, plans to sell its furniture division and concentrate on its mattress business.

The company said it plans to sell the division, which makes sofas, loveseats, chairs and sofa-sleepers, to Vernon and Stephanie Bigsby of Hickory, N.C.

"The Bigsbys have been close to the Park Place Furniture family for many years," said Jimmy Orders, president of Park Place. "I was Vernon's partner in the startup of Motioncraft of Hickory, which was later sold to Sherrill Furniture. Vernon has since been a senior manager at King Hickory Furniture, Leggett & Platt and Clayton Marcus."

Orders said that Stephanie Bigsby has been a consultant to Park Place for several years.

The new owners will continue to use the Park Place Furniture name, and the upholstery operation will remain at its current location in Greenville.

Orders said the move will enable Park Place to focus on mattresses.

"We've enjoyed the furniture business for the past 27 years, but our strategic direction is to focus 100% of our resources on the opportunities in the mattress business," he said. "The mattress business is our core competency and represents our heritage for the past 75 years."

Founded in 1931 as Orders Mattress Co., Park Place is located on a 40-acre campus here. The company continues to operate under the direction of three third-generation members of the Orders family.

Orders said the company's mattress business "has continued to grow substantially faster than the industry. We continue to be optimistic about our future in this business and have some incredibly exciting things happening in early 2006."
