Are you compliant with the Lacey Act?
Ways to protect your business
Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, August 17, 2009
It's a scary new world out there. Under the recently amended Lacey Act, it is possible for innocent buyers to be subject to imprisonment, civil and criminal fines up to $200,000 and forfeiture of goods. Even a simple typo on an import declaration could cost you $250.
There are two primary aspects of the amended Lacey Act that concern anyone--from importers to retailers--handling wood furniture or components in the United States:
1) it is against the law to trade in or own illegally sourced animals/agricultural material regardless of their point of origin or the country in which the illegal action occurred, and
2) companies are required to provide detailed documentation on the source of imported agricultural products.
There's a third component too, but for that and other details on how to protect your business, you'll want to read the Furniture Today White Paper on the Lacey Act written by Elizabeth Baldwin, author of "Complying with the Lacey Act: A Real-World Guide."
