Helps collect 82,747 items

ARCHDALE, N.C. -- In the spirit of the season, Sealy played a leading, giving role as a local food drive, the Triad Holiday Challenge, recorded its best year ever. The event supports Salvation Army food pantries that serve eight counties in central North Carolina.
Sealy, a major sponsor of the Challenge, collected 82,747 items. The company’s goal this year was to donate high-quality, nutritious foods and baby products, items that are especially needed by the Salvation Army.
All told, the 2005 Holiday Challenge collected 325,127 items, an increase from 316,938 items in 2004. Twenty-five corporate and civic organizations accepted a challenge issued by Sealy CEO Dave McIlquham to take part. Those groups and their employees collected 137,220 items, easily beating the previous year’s corporate challenge total of 96,562.
Old Dominion Freight Line, another sponsor, collected 38,785 items. Other companies recognized for their generosity and donations were Guilford County, Market America, Shelba D. Johnson Trucking, Mullen and UPS.
Sealy and Fox8 hosted two holiday concerts, where admission was a donation of canned food items.
McIlquham, introduced at one concert as “a man who never gets a bad night’s sleep,” welcomed the thousands of concertgoers to the event. The orchestra conductor said the event would not have been possible without his support.
