Tupelo Market gets state money
Helps with marketing, promotion
Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, January 11, 2006
TUPELO, Miss. -- The Tupelo Furniture Market has been awarded a $200,000 grant from the state of Mississippi to assist with marketing and promotion of the twice-yearly event.
State officials said the money, which market organizers must match dollar-for-dollar, will help the market compete with the new Las Vegas market and demonstrates the state’s continued commitment to the furniture industry.
“The furniture industry is a very important industry to our state … and we are very appreciative of this support,” said Bill Cleveland, president of the Tupelo market.
Cleveland said it’s too early to say exactly how the money will be spent, but said the state’s dollar-matching requirement won’t be a problem “because we already spend that much on marketing now.”
The Tupelo market had a double-digit decline in attendance at its most recent show last August, which began less than three weeks after the inaugural Las Vegas market.
This year’s Tupelo markets, scheduled for Feb. 22-25 and Aug. 16-19, also begin shortly after markets in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas shows will be Jan. 30-Feb.3 and July 24-28.
