Tempur-Pedic bed hits $7K
Will debut in Vegas

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- In a move sure to get the visco-elastic foam category buzzing, visco leader Tempur-Pedic is introducing a bed designed to retail at about $7,000.
The new GrandBed, in king size, would double the company’s current top price point.
Tempur-Pedic officials had hinted a new high-end bed was coming. But the company, which advertises heavily on cable TV, used the Las Vegas market in July to go in the other direction, bringing out a new starting model, the OriginalBed, at $1,499 retail in queen. Now the company is ready to unveil its premier product, the channel-quilted GrandBed, which will retail at about $6,000 in queen. The bed will debut at the upcoming Las Vegas market, one of three beds the fast-growing visco producer will introduce and the largest product launch in its history. Chris Henning, president of Tempur-Pedic’s retail division, said the GrandBed resulted from dealer requests for a higher-priced bed. “The GrandBed will be the highest-quality Tempur-Pedic mattress available and will represent the true umbrella product for the entire Tempur-Pedic line,” he said. Many Tempur-Pedic retailers said the company “was not pushing the threshold” of higher-priced bedding and that there was definitely a consumer for the GrandBed, Henning said. Tempur-Pedic currently tops out at around $3,500 in king with its CelebrityBed. Dany Sfeir, a senior Tempur-Pedic executive, said consumer research found “a need and a desire for a bed like this.” Without specifying product details, which will be revealed at the Las Vegas market, Sfeir said the GrandBed represents “a unique way of presenting a Tempur-Pedic mattress.” “There is a desire for more luxurious mattresses,” he said. “We have not specifically catered to that segment of the market.” Also set to launch in Las Vegas is the RhapsodyBed, which Sfeir said will be positioned below the CelebrityBed in price. Other Las Vegas introductions will support the GrandBed, he said. Tempur-Pedic shows in space 1036 of the World Market Center in Las Vegas.
