Holiday online sales see early gains
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, January 8, 2006
New York — The four "Cyber Mondays" that occur between Thanksgiving and Christmas are the peak volume days during the holiday online shopping season, surveys show.
Cyber Monday 2 and Cyber Monday 3 — this season, Dec. 5 and Dec. 12 — consistently generate the highest volumes of online sales as people place orders, often from their desktops at work.
Cyber Monday 1, or the Monday after Thanksgiving, consistently outperforms the top sales day for brick-and-mortar stores, the Black Friday after Thanksgiving, according to research conducted by Performics, a marketing division of DoubleClick.
Performics said two primary variables can affect these trends from year to year: whether Thanksgiving falls early or late in November, and the day of the week on which Christmas falls.
In the 2004 holiday season, for example, many e-commerce sites could still offer guaranteed shipping by Christmas on Cyber Monday 4 (Dec. 19) because it was several days before the holiday.
Halfway through the 2005 holiday sales season, online sales were showing big increases over 2004. Sales on the latest Cyber Monday 1 were up 39% from the same day the year before, and were up 35% for Cyber Monday 2, according to Performics.
The trending analysis was based on Performics' year-over-year e-commerce sales data for online retailers. Performics tracks e-commerce sales volume in conjunction with the management of affiliate and/or search engine marketing programs for more than 300 advertisers. Data were normalized to mimic the offline metric of same-store sales and to account for growth in Performics' client base, so the information better reflected trends in e-commerce and organic industry growth.
"These trends provide marketers with the foresight to anticipate peaks in sales volume and prepare accordingly," said Chris Henger, vice president of marketing and product development at Performics.
