HealthSmart wins kudos from Good Housekeeping
David Perry -- Furniture Today, January 8, 2006
Atlanta — The Simmons HealthSmart mattress, which features a removable, washable mattress top, has won a Good Buy Award from Good Housekeeping magazine.
The magazine picked the HealthSmart bedding from among thousands of household items for its 11th Annual Good Buy Awards, featured in the January issue. Eight winners were chosen based on their ingenuity, value and exceptional performance, the magazine said.
Good Housekeeping cited HealthSmart as the "best mattress extra" and said: "Attention allergy sufferers: Want to prevent dust, sweat and other icky stuff from seeping into your mattress?" The mattress top "traps moisture and dirt," the article continued. "And it was easy to zip on and off in the Good Housekeeping Institute test — even after many washes."
At an awards breakfast in New York, Tim Jones, director of advertising at Simmons, accepted on behalf of the company.
HealthSmart bedding has been featured in a number of consumer publications and on television. Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres raved about the mattress on her show a year ago, and gave everyone in her studio audience a certificate for the bed.
The mattress top is designed to be removed so that it can be washed or dry cleaned, allowing a level of cleaning not available on conventional mattresses. That deep cleaning promotes a healthier sleep, according to Simmons.
The HealthSmart line did provide a number of challenges for Simmons. The initial versions were not priced as attractively as company officials had originally planned, a problem that was later remedied.
Simmons Chairman Charlie Eitel said the HealthSmart bedding has recorded substantial sales and remains an important product for Simmons.
