Laslo, Kravet create bedroom furniture

Carole Sloan -- Furniture Today, January 8, 2006

Designer Larry Laslo and interior design firm Kravet have teamed up to create the company's first collection of furniture specifically for the bedroom.

The 34-piece collection includes upholstered beds as well as seating.

"Typically, what's left over from the living room in terms of seating is too big," said Laslo. "In this collection, the bed is the focus — very sexy and romantic — and the seating pieces are designed for the bedroom."

Noting that Kravet is first a decorative fabric house, Laslo said that 70,000 fabric SKUs are available in the program, besides COM.

"And it takes as much fabric to upholster a bed as a sofa," he said.

Mary Ellen Walsh, Kravet's vice president, furniture division, said the beds are offered in queen, king and California king. Other upholstered pieces in Boudoir are 84-inch-tall screens, six benches and seven chairs. Design details include nailhead trims, leather rosettes and the full line of Kravet trims.

Walsh said the Kravet/Laslo liaison is a logical one. "Larry starts with the furniture but he has two fabric and trim collections that are very successful. He's wonderful, easy to work with and has a great sense of style as well as merchandising skill," she said.

American manufacturers are making the furniture under Kravet's private label. The company will show the pieces in its network of designer showrooms.

Laslo also has signature furniture collections with Directional, Ferguson Copeland and Vanguard.
