Lifestyle 'remarket' shows imagination
Ray Allegrezza, Editor in Chief -- Furniture Today, January 8, 2006
I happened to hear the old standard "This Could Be The Start of Something Big" over the holidays, and found myself thinking about Lifestyle's Forbidden City Furniture Show set for Jan. 16–18 in High Point.
To draw the right retailers, Lifestyle is offering to pick up airfare and hotel bills for the first 500 qualified buyers. It also plans to host dinner parties for retailers and hold drawings for BMW and Mercedes-Benz cars. Talk about driving the business to an entirely new level!
Having the vision to host such an event deserves a high five. And since the announcement, interesting things have happened. A steady stream of other High Point resources have promised to have the lights on and the doors open.
To make that happen, exhibitors needed the support of major showroom buildings — and they got it. MMPI, for example, saw the potential win-win and is underwriting the cost of greeters and shuttles to take buyers from the airport into town.
MMPI's Tom Mitchell, a man who knows what's good for High Point and how to get things done, also sent a letter to all his exhibitors, explaining what Lifestyle was doing and encouraging them to participate.
Similar letters were sent by the International Home Furnishings Center and Showplace to their tenants. Lynn Underwood told me that all four of the Center Point buildings she manages will be open for business.
My understanding is that we can expect to see a few hundred retail heavy-hitters in town for this burgeoning event. Make no mistake, however. This is far more than just a different version of what we've known as premarket. Rather, I think what we may be seeing is the birth of a new "remarket" based on current distribution models. And for those longing for change, this venue must be music to their ears.
