Atlanta — Same-store sales were nearly flat for retailer Havertys in December and were down a few percentage points for fellow Top 100 chains Pier 1 Imports and The Bombay Company.
Havertys said its sales total of $79.1 million was up 1% from December 2004, while same-store sales declined 0.7%. For the full year, the Atlanta-based retailer's sales grew 5.5% to $827.7 million, with same-store sales rising 1.8%.
Clarence Smith, Havertys president and CEO, said the company opened its 118th store — in Columbus, Ohio, a new market for the company — on schedule a few days before the year ended.
While Havertys reported sales for the calendar month, Pier 1 and Bombay reported for the five weeks ended Dec. 31.
Fort Worth, Texas-based Pier 1 said its sales of $286.9 million were down 1% from December 2004 and same-store sales declined 4.8%. For the first 10 months of its fiscal year, sales of $1.6 billion were down 3.3% and same-store sales were off 8.1%.
Bombay, also based in Fort Worth, said its total revenue of $100.5 million for the five weeks was down 6.4% from a year earlier, with same-store sales slipping 3.5%. For the first 48 weeks of the fiscal year, revenue was off 1.7% to $528.7 million with same-store sales down 2%.
