Plymouth Meeting, Pa. — Swedish home furnishings retail giant Ikea plans to build a 1.76 million-square-foot distribution center in Savannah, Ga., to support its growing network of stores in the Southeast and Texas.
Ikea will build on 115 acres in the Savannah International Trade Park, with a first-phase, 785,000-square-foot facility expected to be on line by summer 2007. A 975,000-square-foot expansion is planned once the first phase is up and running.
Ikea said the center mainly will serve stores in the Southeast and Texas, including recently opened stores in Atlanta; Houston and Frisco, Texas; and a store planned in Round Rock, Texas, north of Austin. It would also supply other stores as needed. The Top 100 company has 26 U.S. stores.
Ikea opened its Atlanta store this past summer and has said it is eyeing markets including Charlotte, N.C. and southeast Florida for future locations.
"As one of the fastest growing ports in the country, Savannah offers the long-term capacity, infrastructure and geography that we were seeking," said Keith Keller, president of Ikea North America's distribution services.
The retailer has other North America distribution centers in Bristol, Pa.; Brossard, Quebec; Perryville, Md.; Tejon, Calif.; Vancouver, British Columbia, and Westampton, N.J.
