High Point one-pass system ready
By Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, January 22, 2006
High Point — A universal, one-pass registration system is finally a reality for those attending the High Point market.
The International Home Furnishings Market Authority's new registration system went "live" last week, enabling market attendees to obtain a single pass giving them access to all market venues.
Previously, most registration functions were handled by the International Home Furnishings Center, the market's largest showroom building. But some other venues didn't honor the IHFC pass.
"This is a big step forward," Market Authority board member Tom Mitchell said of the new system. "We're really pushing pre-registration."
In addition to registering at the Market Authority's Web site, www.highpointmarket.org, registration information is available by phone at (336) 888-3774.
Registration forms also may be printed from the Web site and faxed to (336) 882-8510.
Market Authority President Judy Mendenhall said temporary workers soon will join her staff to handle the expected influx of calls.
At the April market, registration kiosks similar to those found at airline ticket counters will be set up at the IHFC, Showplace, several buildings owned by Merchandise Mart Properties Inc., and the market's transportation terminal on Commerce Avenue.
The kiosks, which cost about $9,000 each, will print market passes for those registering on-site.
Mendenhall said owners of other showroom buildings have shown an interest in purchasing at least one kiosk, but the Market Authority wanted to limit the machines to the largest showroom buildings for the April market since the registration system is new.
Assuming the system works smoothly, she said, additional kiosks likely will be in operation by the October market.
