Companies join forces to assist Katrina evacuees with bedding

Columbus, Ga. — Three local furniture rental and leasing companies have joined forces to provide bedding to relocated victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Aaron's Sales and Lease Ownership, Colony Furniture Leasing and Home Furnishings Plus provided a truckload of new bedding to an organization that is assisting in the relocation of families that have been displaced by the hurricane.
"We were approached by Angel Walker of the Enrichment Services Program and asked if we could help them by donating any household goods," said Bruce Kemp, president of Royal Rents, which operates two Aaron's stores. "In many cases, the storm victims came to town with little or no possessions. After some discussion, we decided that our new neighbors were in need of quality bedding as much as anything, and that is what we did."
Gene and Robert Kemp, president and vice president of Colony Furniture Leasing, and John Sebastian, owner of Home Furnishings Plus, stepped up to help as well, and along with Aaron's, bedding was manufactured locally and delivered to Walker for distribution.
Local manufacturer Southeast Bedding produced and contributed with the donation.
The group modeled their effort after a similar project the Georgia Home Furnishings Assn. did several years ago to help victims of Hurricane Hugo.
