Atlanta — Top 100 chain Haverty Furniture's donation of $116,000 to the Georgia Chapter of the American Red Cross brought the retailer's total contributions for hurricane relief efforts to $200,000.
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the company started a "Havertys Helps" campaign in its stores in 17 Southern and Midwest states. Through the program, Havertys employees in the stores, distribution centers and corporate offices contributed $58,000. The company then matched the amount.
Havertys also donated $84,000 in bedding to hurricane-affected states along the Gulf Coast. Employees distributed the bedding directly to those in need with help from the Salvation Army.
"We value our presence in all of the communities where we have employees, customers and stores," said Clarence H. Ridley, Havertys chairman and board member of the Metro Atlanta Chapter of the Red Cross. "We consider these contributions to be our civic duty in this time of need."
