New York — Hollywood came shopping at a 1-800-Mattress store here the other day. A film crew shot a scene for a romantic comedy scheduled for release this year.
The movie, which sounds like a theme at 1-800-Mattress, is "The Good Night." It stars Danny DeVito, who plays a sleep doctor, and British comic actor Martin Freeman, who plays a former pop star who suffers a midlife crisis and can't sleep through the night.
They visit the 1-800-Mattress store at 260 West 35th St. to find a comfortable bed. They even get in bed together as they search for just the right bed to produce a "Good Night" of sleep.
The film marks the directorial debut of Jake Paltrow, brother of actress Gwyneth Paltrow, and is produced by Donna Gigliotti, who won an Oscar for "Shakespeare in Love."
They led a crew of 80 at the 1-800-Mattress store, which was closed for the day for filming.
That location was chosen for its storefront, signage and layout. The store has a rear balcony that allowed Paltrow and his crew to shoot various angles of the scenes with DeVito and Freeman trying mattresses.
The movie will give 1-800-Mattress exposure on pillowcases, logos, store signage and posters, and on signs on buses used in New York street scenes. Company officials are delighted with the recognition.
"The 1-800-Mattress brand has become synonymous with quality, service and value in the bedding business," said Luis Barragan, president. "By selecting our showroom for their location, the producers believe that our brand brings value to their own enterprise."
It's the first Hollywood gig for 1-800-Mattress, and the filming may have given the company more than just great exposure.
"We did generate some leads with the cast and the crew," said a spokesman for the retailer.
