Joe Tahan's unveils store in central N.Y.

Yorkville, N.Y. — Joe Tahan's Furniture has opened a 42,000-square-foot store here, just outside Utica. The new store features several 5,000-square-foot galleries, including installations from England, Lane and Sealy, plus a leather gallery and a KidsZone.
Al Tahan is company president and son of 85-year-old founder Joe Tahan, who launched the business in 1950. Tahan's has weathered a blizzard that destroyed half the warehouse in Rome, N.Y., a flood that soaked inventory, and a fire in 1966 that demolished the old Joe Tahan's Furniture store in Rome.
The new facility has created 30 jobs, bringing total employment to over 80 at Tahan's, which includes another store and two warehouses in Rome, and a fleet of delivery trucks.
At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, over 230 guests honored Joe Tahan, who began working at the age of 13 in his father's grocery store in Utica. He left to serve in World War II and, upon his return, began door-to-door sales of household items. He opened his first furniture store in 1950 with his wife, Violette. Today, he serves as marketing spokesman for the company.
