Ikea's first South Florida store to open summer '07

Plymouth Meeting, Pa. — Ikea is coming to South Florida with a 293,000-square-foot store in Sunrise, in Broward County.
It will be the first store in Florida for the Swedish home furnishings giant, which had dropped an earlier plan to build in the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Davie.
Construction on the Sunrise store is expected to begin this spring with an opening in summer 2007. It will include the Ikea staples: 10,000 items for sale, three model homes, 50 room settings, a supervised play area and a 250-seat restaurant.
The retailer did not release projected sales figures or project costs.
The planned store at Interstate 595/State Road 84 and N.W. 136th Avenue will be on 20 acres in a planned Gateway at Sawgrass commercial development, which also will have specialty shops and restaurants.
"We have been looking for the right location in South Florida for quite some time and now have found it," said Ikea Real Estate Manager Dave Iemolo.
In February 2004, Ikea said it was considering opening a store in Davie, but withdrew the proposal later that year.
With more than 225 stores in 33 countries, including 26 in the United States, Ikea has aggressive U.S. expansion plans, aiming to open three to five net new stores a year. Locations on tap include Brooklyn, N.Y.; Canton, Mich.; Draper, Utah; Dublin, Calif.; Portland, Ore.; Round Rock, Texas; Somerville, Mass.; and West Sacramento, Calif.
