Mattress rule will save lives, CPSC says
By David Perry -- Furniture Today, February 19, 2006
Washington — The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission last week approved a federal mattress flammability standard to take effect July 1, 2007.
"Consumers who purchase a new mattress that meets this standard will add an important layer of fire-safety protection to their home," said CPSC Chairman Hal Stratton. "Lives will be saved as a result of this standard."
Bedding industry leaders quickly praised the action. "We commend CPSC for their commitment to this critical initiative," said Dick Doyle, president of the International Sleep Products Assn.
In a 3-0 vote, the CPSC commissioners approved its staff's recommendations on the testing protocol, which calls for a 30-minute burn test. CPSC said it is "one of the most important safety standards ever developed" by the commission.
The standard is designed to limit the spread and intensity of a mattress fire, giving consumers more time to escape from their homes.
