Serta to build innovative HQ
By David Perry -- Furniture Today, February 19, 2006
Hoffman Estates, Ill. — Serta will break ground this spring on a 90,000-square-foot headquarters building not far from its current home here.
The company said it will build a cutting-edge, high-design building in the Prairie Stone Business Park here, on 19 acres it purchased from Sears, Roebuck and Co.
Located off Interstate 90, the 780-acre business park is known for blending a respect for the surrounding wetlands with innovative technology. Construction on the two-story Serta headquarters will begin this spring and is due to be completed in the summer of 2007.
"Outstanding architecture and beauty will be reflected in every aspect of Serta's new international headquarters," said Barbara Bradford, senior vice president of marketing for Serta International. "Our new building will provide an outstanding working environment for Serta's employees and serve as a credit to the Hoffman Estates community. It will also serve as a very visible sign of Serta's continuing commitment to excellence."
The facility will include office space for 110 employees. It also will incorporate a showroom, an auditorium and an attached 20,000-square-foot research center to test and evaluate new designs and components.
Currently Serta occupies 17,000 square feet of space at Prairie Stone in a facility that once served as National Bedding Corp.'s headquarters. The company will exit that facility when the new headquarters is finished. Serta International was formed in 2004 in a merger of Serta Mattress and National Bedding.
Bradford noted that this year marks Serta's 75th anniversary. "This new space also signals the next phase of Serta's global growth," she said.
The Prairie Stone site was attractive to Serta because of its proximity to O'Hare Airport, a hotel and a sports and wellness center, according to John Goodman, executive vice president of Studley, the commercial real estate firm that brokered the deal and will serve as project manager.
