Mischen Glabman, Joan create new fabric source

Charlotte, N.C. — A new fabric source for upholstery manufacturers has been created by a strategic partnership of fabric design and marketing firm The Mischen Glabman Group and Elkin McCallum, owner of Joan Fabrics.
The new venture, Studio Colorworks, will debut in June at Summer Showtime in High Point with a color-based strategy aimed at helping upholstery producers be more competitive, according to Thom Glabman, partner.
"We think the upholstered furniture segment can be more competitive if it gets closer to the fashion industry model of offering innovative new ideas, setting new trends, and creating objects of desire," Glabman said. "The world of imports has a lot of sameness. We plan to make our looks different with the power of color — and we will have fresh fashion color for each season."
Studio Colorworks will focus on velvets, jacquard velvets and woven textures for the middle to better end, with prices in the $5 to $15 per yard range. The debut collection will include 20 to 30 patterns.
Joan Fabrics, which has facilities in the United States and Mexico and recently announced plans for a joint venture to build a plant in China, will make much of the Studio Colorworks product. Some will be sourced globally from other mills. The Mischen Glabman Group will operate the new company, according to Steve Mischen, partner.
"We are really excited to be working with Elkin, who has the manufacturing capability and expertise to create our type of products, and pleased that he believes in our creative strategy and will help take us into the marketplace," Mischen said.
Mischen Glabman previously designed and marketed a collection of upholstery fabrics produced by LaFrance Inds., but the two companies recently separated.
