Klaussner closing Calif. plant
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, August 31, 2009
ASHEBORO, N.C. — Citing poor retail sales, the weak economy and the impact of imported upholstery, Klaussner Home Furnishings said today it will close its La Mirada, Calif., plant effective Oct. 19.
The closing will affect 84 employees, the company said.
“While our import upholstery and case goods business on the West Coast continues to grow, demand for our domestic upholstery products produced there wasn't at an adequate level to operate the facility profitably,” said JB Davis, president and CEO. “This move will allow us to reduce our overall production costs, which will enable us to improve our competitiveness.”
Klaussner said it will maintain its sales force on the West Coast to support its imported upholstery and case goods business there.
Dealers who received upholstery made in the California facility can still receive domestic upholstery products from Klaussner's Iowa and North Carolina service centers.
The plant, a former Golden Oaks facility, has 175,000 square feet. The company's Mentone, Calif., plant was consolidated into La Mirada in 2006.
