Syracuse's Goldberg's closing

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, August 31, 2009

Home furnishings retailer Goldberg's is preparing to close after nearly 100 years in business, the president and owner confirmed last week.

Andrew Goldberg said letters have gone out to longtime customers, giving them “first crack” during a final sale running until Sept 1, before a going-out-of-business sale begins.

The promotional to midpriced Goldberg's opened in 1910 and once operated a chain of seven stores across central New York. Last year, it closed three of its four remaining stores, leaving it with the 100,000-square-foot North Syracuse showroom.

Andrew Goldberg, the fourth-generation owner and operator — and a relative of the Goldberg family that owns and operates Top 100 company Raymour & Flanigan of Liverpool, N.Y. — said a number of factors led to the decision to close, including increased competition and the economic climate. “It all added up,” he said.

The liquidation is expected to wrap up before December, he said. He declined to disclose projected sales.
