Mattress majors react to Consumer Reports' brand ratings
Tempur-Pedic calls No. 1 ranking a ‘huge win'
David Perry -- Furniture Today, September 3, 2009
HIGH POINT — Leading bedding producers had a variety of reactions to the mattress brand ratings just released by Consumer Reports.Memory foam leader Tempur-Pedic, which topped the ratings, called the results "a huge win" for Tempur-Pedic, and said they validate the company's belief that it truly does "change the way the world sleeps."
Said Rick Anderson, president of Tempur-Pedic North America: "We believe in our products and it's reassuring to see that consumers from around the country do as well. We will continue to create mattresses and sleep accessories that exceed customer expectations and look for ways to help people achieve the best night's sleep possible."
Companies who scored in the lower half of the ratings put a positive face on their own quality records.
The brand that ranked tenth - and dead last - on the mattress brand ratings list, Spring Air, noted that the mattresses referred to in the Consumer Reports survey were made by the former Spring Air Co., not by Spring Air International, the new Spring Air entity formed in June.
Rick Robinson, president of Spring Air International, said the new entity is making beds that will score higher in consumer satisfaction. "We expect that from here on out, consumer satisfaction levels with Spring Air International products will increase significantly," he said.
Bob Sherman, president of Serta, which came in seventh on the brand satisfaction list, had this comment: "Serta takes great pride in the comfort and quality of our products. In fact, in our own research among a nationally representative sample of consumers, we found that women who slept on a Serta were more likely to recommend their mattress to family or friends than people who slept on the other major innerspring brands. Plus, our retailers give us consistently high grades for product quality."
Officials with Simmons, which ranked No. 5 on the list, Kingsdown, which ranked No. 6, and Sealy, which ranked No. 8, had no immediate comment on the results.
The mattress brand ratings were based on 13,471 responses about mattresses purchased new between January 2005 and June 2009, according to Consumer Reports. The brand ratings are in the magazine's October 2009 issue.
