Georgia furniture retailer Jay Weinberger dies after police chase

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Furniture retailer Jay Weinberger died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound early Saturday morning in what police here described as a bizarre incident involving a stolen trailer, the Augusta Chronicle reported.
The paper said that Weinberger took off at a high speed after police attempted to stop him for towing a trailer with an expired tag. The chase ended about three miles later when Weinberger was found dead of a single gunshot wound.
The trailer, described as a concession trailer, was reported stolen, the Chronicle said. A search of a warehouse at Weinberger Furniture and Mattress Showcase, turned up another trailer that was reported stolen. The family-owned business has stores in Augusta and Greensboro, Ga.

Im am related to the weinberger family and if you dont have anything nice to say keep your mouth closed.jay was a great guy. he didnt rip people off he sold stuff that had good quality.so if you dont have anything to say about him.keep your mouth shut.

Jay was a selfish, pompous jerk (and obviously a crook), but I would not wish this on anyone.

It is a shame for the kids and family. This will always be tough for the kids to deal with. It seems like with all the friends he had, if he had just been honest with everyone about why he needed the trailers someone would have helped him - legally.
Ed, don't blame me for pointing out the obvious. Do a simple google search for "owner convicted" or "businessman convicted" and tell me that business owners and executives don't often turn to criminal activity to feed their need.

Yes, yes! He was a good man and a respectable businessman. He just stole stuff from people in his spare time. You guys have a funny definition of respectable. Just because you didn't know about his crimes doesn't mean he wasn't doing it. The cops think the evidence is pretty clear. Lots of "respectable" members of the community live two lives. Lots of inner-city drug dealers go to church and donate to charity, but I don't see your posts defending their honor on their blotters.

Jay was a likable guy. It's unbelievable that he would do this. The guy was intelligent and financially stable. There is alot more behind this. Uncharacteristic of him. As far as suicide, it is a small town and everyone knows him or knows of him. Kill yourself for Shame or Dishonor? The Japanese did it. But what a horrible thing to to to Pam, Mark, his kids, mom, Dad and everyone who knew and liked him. The guy did not have any enemies. How devasting to have to shovel dirt on your fathers grave when your a kid.
